South Central Regional Esports Champions Crowned


The SLICE tournament in Houston was a HUGE SUCCESS! The tournament kick-off was on October 10th and the final round was played on Oct 12th in front of a large audience of students, advisors, and APCA artist. The excitement in the room was exhilarating as the audience cheered on their favorite player!

October 12, 2019 – The Student League for Intercollegiate Esports (SLICE) and the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities (APCA) are pleased to announce the winners for their first ever south central regional esports event. Students and esports teams from 12 colleges and universities competed in the tournament held at the Marriott at Westchase in Houston, TX. Teams competed in Smash Brothers, Rocket League, and Fortnite.

San Jacinto College took the overall first place trophy beating out Delgado Community College who came in second. Delgado’s Ryan Vidrine took home first place in Smash Brothers beating out San Jacinto’s Lupe Amezquita in the finals.  Amezquita dominated the preliminary rounds and rolled into finals undefeated, but Vidrine adjusted his game plan and won finals in two straight matches on stage during the last showcase of the conference. 

San Jacinto’s Rocket League Team, Joshua Villela and Yael Pina, took home 1st place and Delgado’s Tim Marteniez took 1st place in Fortnite.

SLICE will hold one more regional competitions this fall in Chicago, IL on November 8-10. Regional participants will be invited to participate in the national competition in Orlando, FL on March 5-8.

The mission of SLICE is to facilitate collegiate esports that create desirable student engagement outcomes for participants. To that end, SLICE provides industry leading competitions and educational opportunities that promote sportsmanship and further the educational mission of colleges and universities.
